I am a Colorado-based visual artist whose work explores the calming intersection of raw textures, natural landscapes, and the profound beauty found within imperfection. Guided by the philosophy of Wabi-Sabi—finding peace and calm in the imperfect —I try to create tactile mixed-media art that invites viewers into a safe, sacred space of discovery and surprise.
I call it Beautiful Grunge.

Artistic Philosophy & Process
As a recovering graphic designer who spends her day working in Healthcare IT, Gina’s studio serves as a sanctuary away from screens. Studio time is an intentional shift toward tactile materials, trading digital precision for raw substrates like paper or wood to celebrate the unpredictable beauty of the human hand. Guided by the philosophy of Wabi-Sabi, her work actively embraces imperfection, asymmetry, and the organic flaws of handmade marks as a necessary, healing contrast to the rigid perfection made by a computer.
Gina views her creative practice and studio as a physical temenos—a concept borrowed by Carl Jung from the ancient Greek term for a walled-off piece of land dedicated to study of self. In Jungian philosophy, a temenos is a sacred, protected psychological space required for deep inner work and transformation. Shaking off the pressure of immediate precision, her process balances intuitive chaos with structural harmony.

Gina begins by letting the subconscious take the lead. She pulls and pushes spontaneous drips, liquid acrylics, and heavy inks across the surface using non-traditional tools like old credit cards. This initial phase is all about embracing raw chaos, happy accidents, and building deep, organic textures.

Once the surface is dry, her love of drawing takes over for the second phase of her work. Bringing her structured eye back to the piece, Gina layers bold, brave line work directly over the top of the paint using pens, pencils, and recently, colored pencils. The paint tells her where to begin.
Heavily influenced by her background in design, these hand-drawn marks are wonderfully imperfect. This detailed drawing stage adds depth and acts as a map, telling the viewer exactly where to look and what to see instead of leaving them in a traditional abstraction.
Gina’s drawing phase has a direct lineage to her mother’s traditional quilting. Much like fabric pieces are deliberately segmented and held together with precise stitching, Gina uses her line work to piece together disparate fields of color.

Through this deliberate mix of chaos in first layers covered over with a quilt-like scaffolding of ink and pencil, she coaxes out the forms of trees, rocks, and rugged botanical silhouettes dwelling above the messy layers. The final result balances wild, organic freedom with a comforting sense of structure, offering the viewer unexpected pockets of surprise and a quiet place to rest.
My goal as a visual artist is to create something beautiful in a safe and sacred space.
